2023 marks a very special year for Loveitts as it is our 180th year of serving the Coventry & Warwickshire community.
One of the oldest companies in the area, Loveitts was founded in 1843 and, since then, we have enjoyed continued success through the decades, overseeing some of Coventry’s largest and most important property deals of almost the last two centuries.
By 1888 the company was titled George Loveitt & Sons and landmark events at that time included a huge auction sale at Coombe Abbey which ran over eight days, the sale of Coventry’s Opera House Theatre in Hales Street, the sale of an estate belonging to a Mr. W. Johnson, which raised £170,000 (thought to be the most expensive property auction sale in pre-war Coventry) and the auction of the Queens Hotel in Hertford Street.
At one point the company auctioned one whole side of
Hertford Street and were themselves based at no. 61 for some years before the
war. The company managed war-damaged properties with a capital value of almost
£1 million including more than 50 per cent of the claims in Broadgate alone.
After the war, the company was run by Mr. Loveitt and partners Mr. Greaves, Mr.
Pomfret and Mr. Spencer – all of whom steered the company’s expansion and
Coventry’s post-war rebirth – including the development of Allesley Park estate
and the construction of Coventry’s new Cathedral. After the loss of the
Hertford Street Office, the company temporarily moved to Grosvenor Road and in
1954 moved to 29 Warwick Row – a former boarding school attended by novelist
George Eliot – where the office is still based.
By the 1960s the company had expanded into Warwickshire and
has continued to grow and evolve. Now with a workforce of 60-plus, our range of
services includes auctions, residential sales and lettings, land sales,
commercial property sales and lettings, property management, property and block
and service charge management – not just in Coventry and Warwickshire but
extending as far a field as Manchester in the North and Southampton in the
South.
A strong and healthy position which stands the company in good stead to work towards another 180 years in business. We remain the only auctioneer in Coventry as well as the largest independent multi-disciplinary practice in the region.
